We value what is unique about each other and celebrate our differences. We treat each other with respect, support each other’s passions, and help each other grow. We welcome healthy debate but don’t tolerate intolerance. We take this commitment outside our four walls, creating neighborhood theaters that are deeply tied to the local community.

A big university town with a vibrant film scene, the Texas capital was a center of 1990s counterculture. Filmmaker Richard Linklater, the founder of the Austin Film Society, had helped establish a grassroots cinephile community in Austin. It was an ideal site to launch a new theater … if they could secure a lease and the capital to open it. Our obsession for movies is matched only by our obsession for beer. We pride ourselves in serving the finest craft beers and supporting the best microbreweries.

Each of the new locations will also include separate full-service bars featuring craft cocktails, wine, and local craft beers on tap. The Leagues accepted an offer to implement a franchise model in 2004, whereby ownership would be split between the Leagues, who retained control of the Austin locations, and franchisees. This created two different Alamo Drafthouse experiences—with different websites, menus, and management groups running their respective sides of the company. “By 2004, Karrie and I were having a hard time coming to grips with growth and moving beyond the Austin market,” he says. “That’s really why we split [the company], leaving Karrie and me to run the Austin locations.

During that time, we focused our efforts on developing and defining the identity of the brand.” During that period, the Leagues launched projects like the Mondo movie-themed merchandise brand, in 2004, and Fantastic Fest, a genre film festival, in 2005. Austin, TX — June 1, 2021 — Theaters are coming back and Alamo Drafthouse is primed to meet the demand. This also marks the end of the company’s Chapter 11 filing with the completion of the sale to Altamont Capital Partners, funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC and Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League. Despite the subterranean locale, don't expect an eerie lair. During a recent media preview for the grand opening, we stepped into a gorgeous and spacious movie palace with 14 different screens, tied for the most of any location with the Alamo in Springfield, Missouri. There's lots of amazing vintage genre posters adorning the walls, along with an exceptional bar called The Press Room filled to the brim with vintage movie ads that you can get custom printed at the titular press.
In 1994, a 24-year-old Tim League, then an engineer at Shell Oil in Bakersfield, California, was driving to work when he noticed the words “For Lease” on the marquee of the Tejon Theatre, a cinema dating back to the 1940s that had fallen on hard times. Unhappy with his original career choice, League was fixated on the idea of opening his own movie theater. He spent the rest of that week researching the exhibition business—driving to Los Angeles to pick up a copy of Boxoffice Pro magazine as a reference—and putting together a rough business plan. Within a week, Tim League had signed the lease on his first cinema. Alamo Drafthouse is also headed to the Gateway City with Alamo Drafthouse’s first theater in St. Louis. Located at the upcoming City Foundry STL development in St. Louis’ Midtown district, Alamo Drafthouse St. Louis is a 10-screen theater from franchise partner St. Louis Alamo Movies, LLC and is expected to open in Spring 2022.
To ensure every guest and teammate has an awesome experience and is excited to come back
The circuit will also be entering new markets in the coming years, including St. Louis, Chicago, Birmingham, and Boston—with an additional city expected to be announced this fall. Cannibalism gags aside, Alamo’s attention to the dine-in element of its identity began around that time. In fact, the Leagues’ first theater in Bakersfield had experimented with dinner-and-a-movie nights—The Bicycle Thief paired with dinner catered by an Italian restaurant, for example—and they had come to Austin ready to expand on the concept. During their honeymoon, which Tim describes as “a working honeymoon,” the couple stopped by the cinema-pub McMenamins, in Portland, Oregon, and drew inspiration from the model ahead of opening the first Alamo in Austin.
Alamo Drafthouse began gaining national attention outside Austin because of the way it eventized the moviegoing experience. In 1999, the theater launched a nine-day film festival hosted by Quentin Tarantino—an early evangelist of the Alamo Drafthouse model. Other events, like that year’s Cannibal Film Festival, which marketed “human flesh on the screen and on your plate,” drew the type of attention that prompted a visit from the health department to inspect the kitchen, due to concerns of actual cannibalism. League ran that movie theater in California as an art house, side by side with his girlfriend, Karrie, who quit her job to manage its operations. By that time, Tim and Karrie had gotten married and were determined to find a way to realize their dream as exhibitors in a new market where they could build on their experience in Bakersfield.

The Greatest Show in Town: The Showbox Theater Offers a Big-City Cinema Experience to the Local Community
Alamop used to host a lot of screenings where the prints would be pre-made and signed and numbered. Here you have the opportunity to actually not only print them to order for the customer, but actually have the customer be a part of the printing process. That's not generally what we do at Mondo, so it's a new facet, but I think it's a great way to expand our expression of beautiful movie nerd posters in this very handmade, tactile way. It was delayed and over budget, over deadline a long time.
Our cinema will have 11 theater screens and seat approx. Since he was a teenager, Shane Pollock knew he wanted to be an exhibitor. He finally fulfilled his long-standing ambition by acquiring his local cinema a few years after the Covid-19 pandemic. Now in theaters from Lionsgate, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare tells the true story of the very first special forces organization. Formed during World War II by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a group of military officials‚ including future... Alamo Time Capsule 1989 is nearly here, with ‘80s essentials like DO THE RIGHT THING, BATMAN, BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II, and ROAD HOUSE all returning to our screens.
On top of that, we’ll be celebrating moms, dads, and Pride with films that showcase all three. In May 2003, Travis Doss opened the first Alamo franchise location (West Oaks Mall) in Houston, Texas with six screens. House of Wax in Brooklyn was not designed as the House of Wax. It was just a small little bar, and then halfway through construction I came across that collection and shifted gears, much to everybody's chagrin.
The Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek had seven screens, all dedicated to new movies. Almost simultaneously, the Alamo granted their first franchise, which opened in the West Oaks Mall in Houston, Texas. Some of our past initiatives include (but are not limited to) working at local food banks, sorting and folding clothing at local thrift stores, and helping build homes with Habitat for Humanity.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema was founded in 1997 as a single-screen mom and pop repertory theater in Austin, TX. Twenty-four years later, with 39 locations and counting, Alamo Drafthouse has been called “the best theater in America” by Entertainment Weekly and “the best theater in the world” by Wired. Alamo Drafthouse has built a reputation as a movie lover’s oasis not only by combining food and drink service with the movie-going experience, but also introducing unique programming and high-profile, star-studded special events.
All the beers (48 of them actually), craft cocktails, and decadent food options the brand is known for are available for in-theater purchase and rapid consumption, along with copious movie nerd merch in the gift shop. Alamo Drafthouse’s evolution from a community movie theater to one of the country’s 20 largest cinema circuits has come with its share of operational crises. In the years preceding the pandemic, the company faced criticism from former employees claiming it minimized reports of sexual harassment and that several locations fostered a hostile work environment. Allegations of workplace misconduct continued into 2020, and the organization was soon struggling to cope with another crisis—the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Our obsession for movies is paralleled only by our obsession for beer. We pride ourselves in serving only the finest craft beers and supporting the best microbreweries. In every theater you'll find over 30 beers on tap in addition a full selection of handcrafted cocktails, bottled beers, soft drinks and award-winning milkshakes. In 2010, after the return of former co-founder Tim League as CEO, the company launched Drafthouse Films, a film distribution company named after, and inspired by, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain. Of the first seven theaters, the downtown Austin theater was unique for being the host of many important film events in Austin, such as the Quentin Tarantino Film Festival and Harry Knowles's annual Butt-numb-a-thon. In 2003, the Alamo Drafthouse, under the direction of CEO Terrell Braly, opened on Research Boulevard in northwest Austin.
